How is Pregnancy Due Date Calculated?

Gestational progress and delivery due dates are estimated based on Naegele's Rule, which assumes a standard gestation period of 280 days (40 weeks) from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). Since ovulation typically occurs in the middle of a 28-day menstrual cycle, our calculator adjusts for shorter or longer cycles by adding or subtracting the difference from the standard 28-day baseline.

Only about 4% of babies are born on their exact calculated due date. The window between 37 and 42 weeks is considered a full-term pregnancy, and births anywhere in this period are completely normal.

Nutrition and Hydration During Gestation

During pregnancy, healthy weight management focuses on providing adequate micronutrients and clean fuel for fetal development rather than active calorie restriction:

  • First Trimester: Energy requirements do not change significantly. Focus on folic acid (from spinach and legumes) to prevent neural defects.
  • Second Trimester: Caloric requirements increase by approximately 340 calories above maintenance TDEE. Focus on calcium and iron-dense local foods.
  • Third Trimester: Caloric targets rise by roughly 450 calories above baseline TDEE. Prioritize high-quality proteins and remain well-hydrated.
