What is Body Fat Percentage?

Body Fat Percentage is the proportion of fat mass in your body relative to your total weight (which includes bones, organs, muscles, and water). While BMI measures overall mass, it cannot distinguish between muscle and fat. An active athlete and an inactive pre-diabetic individual could have identical BMIs, but their body fat percentages and health risk profiles would be completely different.

Keeping body fat within normal parameters supports hormonal function, protects joints, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular events. Specifically, high levels of abdominal visceral fat (fat stored around organs) are associated with insulin resistance and high blood pressure.

How to Measure Accurately

To get reliable results with the US Navy method, follow these precise tape measurement guidelines:

  • Height: Measure without shoes, standing flat against a wall.
  • Neck: Measure just below the larynx, pulling the tape slightly downward. Avoid tensing neck muscles.
  • Waist: Measure horizontally around your midsection. For men, measure at the navel level. For women, measure at the narrowest point (usually just above the navel). Do not pull your stomach in.
  • Hips (Women Only): Measure horizontally around the widest part of your gluteal muscles.
