Understanding Body Shapes & Proportions

A person's body type shape is determined by skeletal architecture, genetic fat distribution patterns, and muscle structures. Unlike body weight, which you can adjust, your structural skeletal parameters (such as shoulder width and pelvic bone structure) are permanent features of your frame.

Classifying body shape helps select workout routines and target specific body proportions. For example, individuals with "Apple" shape silhouettes carry fat centrally around the abdomen (visceral fat), which carries higher metabolic and cardiovascular risks than fat stored on the hips (common in "Pear" shapes).

How to Measure Proportions Accurately

To identify your correct structural silhouette, measure these areas using a flexible tape:

  • Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape level.
  • Waist: Measure at the narrowest section of your torso (typically 2 inches above the navel). Do not suck in your breath.
  • Hips: Measure at the widest part of your pelvic gluteal muscles.
