What are Heart Rate Training Zones?

Heart rate zones represent different ranges of cardiovascular intensity, measured in beats per minute (BPM). These zones correspond to the energy pathway your body uses to power activity:

  • Zone 1: Active Recovery (50-60% Max HR): Great for warming up, cool-downs, and recovery days.
  • Zone 2: Fat Burning Aerobic Zone (60-70% Max HR): The body uses stored fats as the primary fuel source. Ideal for building baseline cardiac endurance and long-duration workouts.
  • Zone 3: Cardio Endurance Zone (70-85% Max HR): Builds general fitness, strengthens heart muscles, and improves respiratory efficiency.
  • Zone 4: Anaerobic Performance (>85% Max HR): Short, explosive efforts that build raw speed and power. Fuel source shifts primarily to carbohydrates (glucose).

How to Measure Your Heart Rate

You can track your heart rate during workouts using these methods:

  • Smartwatches & Trackers: Utilize optical light sensors on your wrist to read vascular flow. Highly convenient for continuous feedback.
  • Manual Pulse: Press your index and middle fingers against your carotid artery (neck) or radial artery (wrist). Count beats for 15 seconds and multiply by 4 to get your BPM.
